How I discovered my superpower

How I discovered my superpower

The 18-24th March is Neurodiversity Celebration Week a topic that is very close to my heart.

In 2023 I was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD which I can only describe as completely liberating, almost like an explanation for so many of the traits, that over the years I have found so debilitating and frustrating.

So much of overcoming, is awareness, we need awareness to identify and create an understanding of why we do certain things or behave in certain ways.

An adult diagnosis for me has been life changing. For as long as I can remember I had a shadow hanging over me around my school achievements, failing 8 of 11 GCSEs failing 2 of 3 A-Levels, getting into university via clearing and failing my first year....These failures went on until eventually an amazing university tutor gave me the support I needed to get a 2:1 degree.

But still without a diagnosis I struggled with relationships, corporate jobs, and self-medicating through my twenties, feeling incapable compared to everyone else around me.

That was until I started Love Ocean, it was as if all the things that held me back everywhere else, were my absolute superpowers as a business founder, creating the vision, problem solving, multi-tasking, creativity, the list goes on. I was staggered to learn recently that 30% of UK entrepreneurs are neurodivergent.

In the UK, 15-20% of the total population is neurodivergent, with thinking and learning styles that differ from what's considered typical.  It is so important that we continue to raise awareness and celebrate neurodiversity as a superpower, not a handbrake, and help this minority group break free of institutions that don't support their difference. We need different minds to create change and innovation.
